The camera can figure out the exact position of the pen, including which page it is on of which journal. They are quite visible when one looks, but for the most part they are easy to ignore. These dots are extremely small and light blue, a lighter shade than the ruled lines on the page. The dot pattern is patented by Anoto, from whom the dot paper is licensed. The Pulse is the latter, which ensures a constant cash flow to LiveScribe in the form of dot paper, which is the only writing surface the Pulse can locate itself on.ĭot paper is, as the name implies, paper covered with a very fine imperfect grid of dots in a very specific pattern. There are two primary variations of smartpens: triangulators, which use a pair of sensors clipped to the top of the paper to watch for a signal being emitted by the pen and record the position of the pen on the page by calculating it via trigonometry and dot cameras, which have a small infrared camera in the tip that reads a special pattern of dots on the page that, within the vision range of the camera, does not repeat for a very large area. The LiveScribe Pulse is a variety of smartpen: a pen designed for close integration with a computer, to archive everything handwritten in clear digital format with a minimum of inconvenience. It is marketed primarily to college students, but is useful in any endeavor that requires handwritten notes. Its banner feature is Paper Replay, the automatic coordination of locations on the page to points in the sound recording. It can best be summarized as the offspring of a smartpen and a digital voice recorder. In any case, I am very enthusiastic about my purchase, and I would not know of any other product that can replace this 1-2-3.The LiveScribe Pulse is the debut product of LiveScribe, Inc. Why:ġ) Digital notes and voice recording in oneĢ) Small pen, so easy to carry (along with paper)ģ) Taking notes on paper, without electronic backing or other aidsĤ) Rechargeable battery in the pen that has sufficient capacityĥ) Free paper printing for this pen, which avoids high user costs. I've looked at several alternatives, however, the Livescribe Pulse Smartpen was an easy choice. The reason I needed such a tool was because I liked having notes digitally and possibly. The purpose of this is not to be able to forget anything. I especially use this pen during meetings and important customer conversations. I've been using the Livescribe 4 Gb Pulse Smartpen for several weeks now. Unfortunately, there is not yet a standard such as PDF in which both the notes and the sound can be saved (note! Notes can of course be saved as PDF and Audio can be saved separately). Thanks to the Livescribe Pulse Smartpen, you dot the i's and cross the t's. This way, everybody can use your notes without needing special software. You can simply send an email with a link to your online pencast. It's very easy to share these files online via interactive flash animations, for which there's plenty of space thanks to 500MB online storage space. The desktop software recognizes separate LiveScribe Dot Paper notebooks, so it's easy to keep the notes of multiple lectures or various accounts separate. You can easily transfer your notes and audio with the USB station. With the Smartpen, it's totally fine to be long-winded, because there's 4GB storage space for 400 hours of sound recordings. If you want to listen to specific portions, you tap the relevant words with the pen and play them back via the built-in speaker or the included earbuds. While you hear the sound recording, you also see the captured notes on your screen. The result is a pencast, which displays your handwritten notes including audio. This notebook contains special paper with thousands of small dots for the infrared camera. You then write down just a few key words in the Livescribe Dot Paper notebook at important moments. At the beginning of your lecture, conversation, or interview, you start the sound recording. The Pulse Smartpen links every spoken word to your handwritten notes or drawings. This smartpen has both a microphone and infrared camera. Are you spending a lot of time on taking notes and minutes? The Livescribe Pulse Smartpen offers a helping hand.
